Why You Shouldn’t Hit the Beach without Water Shoes

The concept of water shoes is still foreign to a lot of people. Why would you want something on your feet while you’re swimming? Or, why would you wear something while walking on the beach when you could feel that warm sand under your feet instead? But, unless you’ve cut yourself on a sharp rock or slipped and fallen on a dock, you won’t understand how invaluable a pair of nice water shoes can be. In this article, we’re going to give you a few reasons why you shouldn’t hit the beach without water shoes.

Foot Protection

While for many people, hot sand might be one of the highlights of a day at the beach, for some people, it can be a nuisance. One of the major benefits of a good pair of water shoes is that it will protect you from the piping hot sand while allowing your feet to breathe.

But, the greater problem is when you’re trying to walk across the sand and step on broken glass or sharp rocks. The same issue exists if you’re in the water since rugged coral and sharp rocks could pierce your foot. And don’t think that being in the lake keeps you safe from mussel shells, which along with broken glass and trash, could still hurt you. Water shoes have a hard sole that protects your foot from cuts and abrasions.

Get a nice pair of water shoes to protect your feet. If you want extra protection, go for a pair of water shoes with toe-shields, to help save yourself from a stubbed toe. This is especially important when wading through rough and unpredictable terrain, such as rock pools and river beds.


Another benefit of water shoes is that they provide traction on wet surfaces. Water shoes provide traction and support whether you’re on a boat dock, the deck of a ship, riding on your jet ski, or simply walking along a diving board.

There are many times when the improved traction water shoes provide is necessary to be able to get out of the water safely. Wear water shoes while tubing so that you are less likely to slip and fall while climbing up onto the muddy banks of the river. Water shoes likely make it easier to get back into your kayak or on to your surfboard. Or, you could just wear them around the pool knowing you’re less likely to slip and trip.

Water shoes are critical when you’re sailing or engaging in water sports or where you’re walking around on wet surfaces all day. You can find models on with greater heal cushioning, so you don’t have to choose between traction and comfort.

Some people prefer to skip on water shoes and go for old tennis shoes instead, but they aren’t as efficient as water shoes. With old tennis shoes, you won’t have the same water protection and you definitely won’t get the same level of traction as well.

Another issue with wearing sneakers is that they tend to swell up and absorb water, which will make your feet heavier when swimming. Not only that, but they can also take a long time to dry and there is a risk of mold starting to develop in the shoe. Instead, go for lightweight water shoes designed for the environment instead of trying to use old tennis shoes.


Forget your old ideas of water shoes. Water shoes today come in a variety of styles and can complement any outfit you’re wearing. Some water shoes today look just like athletic shoes, and often offer almost the same performance, so nobody will be able to tell. You’ll be able to jump out of the water and go back to your regular activities without missing a beat – and even wear them all day if you want.


While basic slip-on water shoes provide traction, more advanced water shoes provide support as well. While slip-on shoes will be fine for underwater use and on the beach, lace-up models will give you added ankle support if you’re thinking of doing some trekking.

Booties and lace-up water shoes will save you from a twisted ankle when you’re hiking along streams or wet trails, but they’ll still give you good traction on any wet surfaces as well, and will feel comfortable while swimming, making them the perfect all-terrain shoe.

These same water shoes can give you extra protection from injuries while kayaking or canoeing. Good water shoes can give you proper arch support too so that you can be comfortable walking and climbing over wet surfaces all day. If you wear water shoes while you’re fishing, especially on a boat, you’ll be comfortable while having a good grip that will prevent you from falling at times you need extra traction.

Healthier Feet

Water shoes are designed to let the water drain away, so your feet will dry more quickly once you get out of the water. This way, the risk of foot fungi and other issues is dramatically reduced. They’ll fit your foot properly compared to wet tennis shoes, so you won’t face the same risk of blisters when hiking on wet trails in old tennis shoes. That squishy, heavy mass your hiking boots or tennis shoes become when wet is a recipe for blister formation.

Water shoes provide better temperature regulation for your feet, too. If you are getting into cold water, a water shoe provides some much-needed thermal protection. In severe cases, the cold can make your feet numb, which could lead to other risks as well. Numb feet aren’t as sensible, and not having full sensory data could throw your balance off once you step out of the water.


No matter what you’re doing in or around the water, water shoes will improve your endurance, performance, and security. And with the wide variety of styles and design available on the market, everyone can find a type of water shoe that works for them.
